“THE SILVER BRACELET”

THE THIRD BOOK IN THE UNICORN’S SECRET

Introduction

The story was entitled The Silver Bracelet of the Third Book in the Unicorn’s Secret by Kathleen Duey and published originally on April 1, 2002. Kathleen Duey grew up in Colorado. She loved riding her horse, hiking in mountains. In relation of that, she wrote this book because she love horses. The Silver Bracelet is the continuation of the Second Book of the Unicorn’s Secret entitled The Silver Thread. In the previous book Heart’s white mare has a very special foal which she names Moonsilver. He is in fact a Unicorn! When the colt is endangered by Lord Dunraven and his guards she runs away into the forest to save his life. But when he is wounded she must sneak back into the village for help from village healer Ruth.

Characterization

                This book had many character namely Heart the main character of the story, she help the unicorn to find their way back home to survive from the evil Lord Dunraven. Lord Dunraven the protagonist in the story he wanted to get the unicorn from hand of Heart. Moonsilver the white mighty unicorn. Avamir the horse of Heart and friend of Moonsilver. Kip the dog of Ruth and friend of Moonsilver, Avamir and Heart. Ruth the friend of Heart. Zim, Davey, Fiona, Binny, Josepha and Talia are the circus performers, minstrel and friends of Heart.

                Duey created a very good main character to inspire young people and to make it model for them on how to care and protect their pets against the bad person like Lord Dunraven. Also, this story will measure how much you love your pets.

Plot

                Heart must hide her beloved unicorn, Moonsilver, from Lord Dunraven’s hunters. Because Lord Dunraven are searching for unicorn and that unicorn is pet of Heart with the help of Ruth he thought the cave for Heart as a safe house together with her pets then after how many days, there is a group of people who are near from her cave and she is worried about her mysterious unicorn so, he went to that people and she found out that the group of people is a minstrel and circus performer they were invited in different places just to perform their talents they are called gypsies. The gypsies was amazed on Heart’s talent on how she manipulates her pets. And some group of gypsies was amazed on the unicorn of Heart and they didn’t believed that the horn of unicorn is real. So, the gypsies decided to hire Heart to join to their group because they found out that she and her pets has the talent and Heart accepted the offer.

 Rising action:

                One day, while they are performing at Ash Groove one of their member named Davey the air balancer was fall down from air because he can’t  focus well, so the crowd was shocked and worried on Davey because he suffered a serious condition.

Climax:

 On the other hand, Heart played her flute to command Moonsilver the unicorn to heal Davey and the crowd was amazed after they witness the scenario. The crowd was doubt about the unicorn. Some says that it is real and others believes it is just a horse performer with a fake horn.

                A night after the accident, Davey and others was thankful to Heart and his Unicorn. Benny gave him a silver bracelet that was came from his mother. He believes that the bracelet has a power. When Heart wear it, she feel something. While she is walking went to her room she heard the conversation of the two guys which is the crew of gypsies. They had the plan to take out the unicorn and give it to Lord Dunraven. She felt sad because she already trusted all of them.

Falling action:

                When midnight came, Heart together with her pets they escaped from the gypsies and tried to use her mysterious silver bracelet to find a safe place for all of them. Even though she felt cold but she still managed to escape from the gypsies.

Resolution:

                Heart abandon the place and went to the mountain were she preferred to stay there in order for her and her pets to be safe.

Art and delivery

The work of Kathleen Duey was easy to understand and the font size was suitable for children. But her spacing consumed more spaced. She used descriptive words in describing Heart’s pet. In some manner, the pencil work of Omar Rayyan was good and he created a very nice image unfortunately, he used only two colours which is black and white and I found it boring.

Final verdict

I rated this book 8 out of 10. Because this book was a continuation of the unicorn’s secret, it means it was based from the previous book and I think the next book will be more interesting and exciting. In short, if this book was good it will not result to the author to create the continuation of the book. but overall, it is a good book.
